About

I spent a decade on the mobile web, back when the hard problem was a 320-pixel screen and a browser nobody had heard of. I was CTO at dotMobi and at Argogroup, and wrote a great deal of what is now in the archive here about all of it.
Then I spent ten years at Facebook and Meta, latterly as an Engineering Director running data infrastructure and developer tools organizations, the company’s open source program, and as an engineer on the Portal smart speaker device.
These days I live on a boat — a Garcia Exploration 45 called Scout — with my wife Jayne, and I build software when the wind isn’t blowing. Mostly TinyBase, a reactive data store and sync engine for local-first apps, and the small family of things that grew around it.
This site is built with Vite, React, vanilla-extract, TinyWidgets and TinyBase, which is to say I use my own tools for it. It is a few files on GitHub Pages, which is all it has ever needed to be.
